Outside of Evolution

Published: 10/05/21

I’m very quick to turn to evolution when I’m considering why humans act the way we do. Whether it’s the fear of being kicked out of our tribe, or why social media affects us in the way that it does.

I’m currently reading this book about sex by Alain de Botton, and throughout the book he talks about is how we can be very quick to turn to the evolutionary reasons for why something is happening, when there are a whole host of other factors within our psychology outside of the realm of evolution.

This made me realise that I’m perhaps too quick to turn to evolutionary reasons when thinking about human behaviour in general and that there is often more at play than basic survival and reproduction impulses going on in our psyche.

This seems so obvious now I’ve written it down, but it simply never occured to me before.
