Pinpointing Emotions

Take a moment, and try to recognise how you feel right now. Happy? Sad? Tired? Excited?

Then, try and pinpoint why. Because of something happening out in the world? A text message you’ve received from a loved one? Your computer playing up, again?

It seems pinpointing this with any accuracy is an impossible task. We experience emotions, and then assign our best guesses to them. We can rarely know with much certainty why we actually feel the way we do.

I find there’s a freedom in this. A reason to not identify too strongly with our emotions, a sign that we don’t hold as much control as we think we do.

Perhaps we can hold a healthy scepticism of our emotional responses, and instead use them as an indication that some reflection is required.
