Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Published: 02/04/21

A silly name perhaps, but “Revenge Bedtime Procrastination” is what we’ve decided to call this idea, so what can you do? I first heard about this on Ali Abdaal’s YouTube channel:

You reach the end of the day. The obvious move is to go to bed, perhaps you’re even in bed already. But, you are suddenly captured by the need to check all of the social media/emails/whatever else. For some reason, right now seems like a great time to watch all of those YouTube videos you wouldn’t usually watch, or the perfect opportunity to get caught in an Instagram wormhole that you just wouldn’t engage with in the daytime.

Sleep Foundation describe this phenomenon as: “the decision to sacrifice sleep for leisure time that is driven by a daily schedule lacking in free time.”

If we feel we’ve been too rigid during the day, then it seems our minds can adopt a “fuck you daytime person, you were too rigid today, and now it’s my time to do whatever the fuck I want rather than letting you go to sleep.”

Isn’t it crazy that such a concept exists? What a weird time we live in!
