I wrote this as a heading because I’m trying to get some ideas out there, but this then lead to an obvious question, why does “spitballing” mean throwing out a potentially weird idea?
Well, it turns out that we don’t really know, but one of the potential origins is fantastic:
A spitball is an illegal baseball move in which the person throwing the ball adds some saliva to it in order to make the ball behave erratically. The move was banned in 1920 and can also be called a “spitter”, a “wet one”, or my personal favorite, an “unsanitary pitch”.
